Capillary waves at soft electrified interfaces

چکیده
Recent theory of capillary waves along the interface between two immiscible electrolytes is generalized to include the non-linear polarization of the double layer. The theory covers both the effects of the capillary waves on the double layer capacitance, as well as the effect of charging the interface on the amplitudes and spectrum of capillary waves. The theory explains major available experimental data, such as the interfacial capacitance dependence on the potential drop across the interface and on ionic strength. It also predicts a number of new effects, such as the influence of electric field and electrolyte concentration on the surface corrugation correlation function, and in particular, on the mean square height of corrugation. © 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. Nematic liquid crystals at rough and fluctuating interfaces.
Nematic liquid crystals at rough and fluctuating interfaces are analyzed within the Frank elastic theory and the Landau-de Gennes theory. We study specifically interfaces that locally favor planar anchoring. In the first part we reconsider the phenomenon of Berreman anchoring on fixed rough surfaces, and derive new simple expressions for the corresponding azimuthal anchoring energy. Surprisingl...
متن کاملEllipsoidal particles at fluid interfaces.
For partially wetting, ellipsoidal colloids trapped at a fluid interface, their effective, interface-mediated interactions of capillary and fluctuation-induced type are analyzed. For contact angles different from 90( degrees ) , static interface deformations arise which lead to anisotropic capillary forces that are substantial already for micrometer-sized particles. The capillary problem is sol...
متن کاملLarge-amplitude capillary waves in electrified fluid sheets
Large-amplitude capillary waves on fluid sheets are computed in the presence of a uniform electric field acting in a direction parallel to the undisturbed configuration. The fluid is taken to be inviscid, incompressible and non-conducting. Travelling waves of arbitrary amplitudes and wavelengths are calculated and the effect of the electric field is studied. The solutions found generalize the e...
متن کاملOrder-chaos-order transitions in electrosprays: the electrified dripping faucet.
Electrosprays have diverse applications including protein analysis, electrospinning, and nanoencapsulation for drug delivery. We show that a variety of electrospray regimes exhibit fundamental analogy with the nonlinear dynamics of a dripping faucet. The applied voltage in electrosprays results in additional period doublings and temporal order-chaos-order transitions. Attractors in the return m...
متن کاملEvidence of random copolymer adsorption at fluctuating selective interfaces from Monte-Carlo simulation studies.
We perform Monte-Carlo simulations of a binary, strongly separated mixture of A- and B-type homopolymers with some amount of random AB copolymers added. The interface is analyzed and the interface tension is calculated using the model of capillary waves. We can clearly demonstrate that random copolymers are localized at real, fluctuating interfaces between incompatible polymer species and micel...
